Bring the Coast Home
I recently enjoyed a delicious, blackened fish sandwich. I was at a restaurant overlooking the coast in New Smyrna Beach, Florida. The experience was nothing short of extraordinary!
The fresh fish was perfect, the flavor was a delight, and the view was breathtaking. After one bite, I knew this was a meal I would never forget.
What made this blackened fish sandwich so special? It was the fresh, flavorful fish and a creamy, spicy sauce. Cooked to perfection, the fish was slightly charred and delicious. The spicy sauce added a nice kick to the sandwich.
The setting of the restaurant was also spectacular. The outdoor seating area was the perfect place to take in the stunning views of the ocean. The atmosphere was peaceful, and the sound of the waves added to the ambiance.
If you are in New Smyrna Beach, try a blackened fish sandwich. It may be one of the best.
But if you don’t live or visit the coast, it is still possible to cook like you are on the beaches of Florida. Blackened Fish Sandwiches bring you to the beach without leaving your kitchen.
The Finest Cajun Seasoning
The essential part of a blackened fish sandwich is a Cajun seasoning mixture. The seasoning combines paprika, cayenne, garlic powder, pepper, and herbs. Be sure to cover both sides of your fish fillets with this seasoning.
This recipe uses One Plate at a Thyme Salt-Free Cajun Seasoning. Combine the ingredients and mix well.
Ingredients:
- 2 tbsp. paprika
- 1 tbsp. garlic powder
- 1 tbsp. onion powder
- 1 tbsp. dried thyme
- 1 tbsp. dried oregano
- 2 tsp. chili powder
- 2 tsp. black pepper
- 2 tsp. cayenne pepper
- Combine the spices in a small bowl.

Spicy Garlic Aioli
Make a Spicy Garlic Aioli for this sandwich. The creamy mayo cuts the heat of the spice on the fish. It is easy to make and adds another dimension to the sandwich. Combine the following ingredients and let the flavors come together.

Helpful Tips for the Best Sandwich
These tips will help you create a delicious and satisfying sandwich.
Choose the Right Fish:
You can use any fish for this sandwich, but I recommend a mild-flavored whitefish. This recipe uses easy-to-find tilapia or cod. Other options are mahi-mahi, grouper, swordfish, or halibut. Each has a different flavor and texture. Experiment with a variety to find the one that is best for you. Fresh fish is best, but there are many good frozen choices. Be sure to thaw the fish before preparing the sandwich.
Season the Fish Well:
Pat the fish dry with a paper towel and season it with the spice mixture. Make sure to coat both sides of the fillet. The blend of herbs and spices cooks until they are slightly char on the outside. Charring gives the fish a unique flavor full of depth and complexity.
Select Good Bread:
A toasted bun adds a layer of crunchy texture to the sandwich. A good bun also helps absorb the flavors of the fish, making each bite even more delicious.
Try Adding Condiments:
Use sauces like tartar sauce, creamy coleslaw, or spicy garlic aioli. These condiments add flavor and a nice contrast of texture to the sandwich.
Cook in a Smoking Hot Pan:
Cast iron holds and distributes heat well. Fry the fish for four to five minutes per side.
The next time you want something quick and easy, try the classic blackened fish sandwich. With its unique flavors and textures, it’s sure to be a hit!

New Smyrna Beach is a tremendous place. The story reflects the time my wife and I were at Breakers Ocean Front Restaurant. We were captivated by the sights and sounds of the ocean. But as the beachgoers began to scurry, we became alarmed. Facing the east, we didn’t notice the afternoon thunderstorm coming from the west. We decided to return to the house and watched the storm roll through from the garage.
